How do you choose the right idea?

Resonance from Continuum on Vimeo.

CONTINUUM has put together an illustrative (and very watchable) video about their outlook and process. While they do begin to discuss what design strategy is and how it is developed, the video's primary focus is to indicate the importance of finding the "right" solution: the one idea that brings diverse insights together and fits into the tight space between meaning and profitability.

Designing Mobile Technology for Emerging Markets

MobilGlyph: Making Data Tangible from Adaptive Path on Vimeo.

In rural India, being able to store a number in contacts and then call that contact is a primary mechanism for overcoming traditional infrastructure challenges, like learning the prices of goods at market. However, currently, most mobile phones available to people in rural areas of India, have a text driven interface, making it near impossible for illiterate users to obtain and store contacts. Solving the "save a contact" problem for illiterate users became one of the focuses for our project. To show how data could be made tangible, and how illiterate users could easily share contact information, we created a concept called MobilGlyph.

Nokia’s Maemo Harmattan Screenshot

The home screen (”Harmattan Direct UI”) is essentially one big vertically scrolling page on which users can add widgets. We’ve seen a few widget examples so far, and they all appear to take up the full width of the screen.

Multiuser Augmented Reality Applications

The invisible Train

"The Invisible Train is the first real multi-user Augmented Reality application for handheld devices (PDAs). Unlike other projects, in which wearable devices were merely used as thin-clients, while powerful (PC-based) servers performed a majority of the computations (such as graphics rendering), our software runs independently on off-the-shelf PDAs - eliminating the need for an expensive infractructure."

Desktop multitouch imaging

Working with small screens and a mouse plus keyboard combination is the current state of art when it comes to image editing. This can be problematic in a number of ways, especially when working in a team. Also, it is not natural to use a mouse to draw and edit images. Multi-touch image editing uses a natural flow and offers a bigger, detailed view of the image at hand. We used hand gestures in combination with a »magic pencil« as an additional tool for working. This pen helps the user to cut out objects and draw fine lines with a familiar device.
